CURRENT STATUS: Fire growth over the last few shifts has occurred primarily northeast in the direction of Panther Ridge, East Creek, and Stair Creek. This pattern of growth is likely to remain consistent.
Northwest of the Backbone Fire, firefighters are working to complete containment line and hose lays along Panther Ridge, looking for opportunities to connect this line and other indirect lines down to the Rogue River. Near Brushy Bar, hotshot crews were able to complete line construction from the Rogue River to the fire’s edge. A falling module is working in this area to mitigate a patch of hazard trees that pose a threat to firefighter safety and containment lines. Structure protection around the lodges in the fire area is ongoing.
On the Pinnacle Fire, firefighters have reinforced containment lines to ensure the fire remains within its current footprint. Structure protection personnel are assessing fuels reduction needs around private property and strengthening indirect lines around Illahe. A contingency group on the east side of the fire will continue chipping along Long Gulch Road and Forest Service Road 300. This work is expected to be completed within the next few operational shifts. Similarly, a contingency group along the west flank are also completing chipping operations to create depth on indirect lines.
River travel is critical to the Moon Complex, providing the only safe access for firefighters to both the Backbone and Pinnacle Fires. Half Moon Bar Lodge and Paradise Lodge have provided logistical support for crews, including meals and camping, allowing them to stay within the fire area and reduce daily travel time. Jet boats are ferrying supplies and additional crews into the fire area daily. The Rogue River is also a primary water source for aviation resources. Please be aware of heavy firefighting traffic on the water and in the air along the Rogue River from Blossom Bar to Tate Creek . Do not linger in the fire area if you are on the river. Air resources were unable to assist firefighting operations on the ground due to visibility throughout the day on Sunday. The aviation group will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide support when safe to do so.
WEATHER & SMOKE: Above average temperatures and low humidities will begin today, along with gusting winds which may increase fire behavior. Tomorrow is likely to be the hottest day of the week, potentially reaching the 100s, with humidity in the teens. Smoke and air quality information is available at https://www.oregonsmoke.org/ and https://www.airnow.gov.
SAFETY: Be aware of changing conditions and follow the direction of River Rangers and firefighting personnel when recreating on the river. Permitted boaters can contact the BLM Smullin Visitor Center at 541-618-2408 or email [email protected] with questions about the status of the river. Members of the public driving in the area are advised to drive slowly and stay alert for firefighters and equipment on the roads.

EVACUATIONS: Several areas remain in Level 1 (Ready) and Level 2 (Get Set) evacuations.
