A recording of Monday’s Fire Status Update is available on www.facebook.com/SWORFireInfo.
With heavy rains arriving across the fire area, evacuation levels have been reduced and the threat to structures has significantly diminished. As a result, Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) resources assigned to the Moon Complex are returning home. The Oregon State Fire Marshal Green Team thanks the communities of Illahe and Agness for their support and resilience throughout this incident, as well as the local partners who worked alongside OSFM taskforces to protect lives and property.
CURRENT STATUS: Most of the fire’s growth Sunday and Monday was due to fire activity on Panther Ridge, as well as where the fire is backing into Shasta Costa Creek. Up to an inch of rain fell on the fire area yesterday, resulting in minimal fire behavior. It will take more rain, however, to fully penetrate the canopy and reach the forest floor where there is still surface fire and smoldering vegetation. Resources were strategically placed in areas around the fire to avoid damage to the wet road system with large engines and heavy equipment.
Suppression efforts were focused on securing a large spot fire northwest of Illahe Lodge and identifying and extinguishing smaller spot fires along Panther Ridge. Firefighters also scouted for opportunities to go more direct along Forest System Road 060. A boat crew could not get past Wild River Lodge but did report that fire progress had slowed in the Hicks Creek area. Aviation was grounded due to the storm. On the southeast side of the fire, crews assessed the area where fire crossed Bear Camp Road/FSR 23, but rockfall and hazardous trees prevented them from entering the area. Work continued prepping and scouting FSR 2308.
WEATHER: More rain is predicted today, with winds out of the south-southwest and gusts up to 31 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the low 60s.
EVACUATIONS: All Level 3 (GO NOW!) evacuation orders have been lifted. A Level 2 (BE SET!) evacuation order is in place from Tacoma Rapids (River Mile 29) to the Oak Flat Area, including Agness; and southwest from Spud Road and the Rogue River, bordered on the northwest by Forest System Road 33 (Agness Road) and ending at Forest System Road 3318. An interactive evacuation map can be found at https://bit.ly/MoonComplexEvacs.
SMOKE: Air quality is good this morning. Air quality information is available at https://www.oregonsmoke.org/ and
https://www.airnow.gov.
CLOSURES: Bear Camp Road, Eden Valley Road, Forest System Road 2308, and Forest System Road 33 from Agness to FSR 3348 are closed. The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is implementing an expanded closure area to protect public and firefighting safety. Lands, roads, trails and recreation on the Rogue River are closed in this area. Please visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/rogue-siskiyou/alerts for closure information and maps.
