Moon Complex Update October 20, 2025

First Start Date: 9/3/2025

Size: 19,520 acres

Containment: 34%

Cause: Lightning

Personnel: 347

CURRENT STATUS:Multiple repair operations have been completed along the northern flank, while a chipping operation along FSR 5520 is expected to continue through the next few days. On the northeast flank, crews successfully completed a backhaul mission near Marial Lodge. Along the southern flank and river corridor, resources remain active, patrolling for areas of isolated heat and advancing suppression repair efforts.

The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team will utilize an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS/drone) to support data collection and assess soil burn severity. Additional BAER team members, including hydrologists, geologists, engineers and specialists in botany, fisheries, recreation and heritage, will also be on site. These specialists will evaluate damage to vegetation, including canopy and root systems, as well as roads, stream channels, facilities and cultural resources. Their findings will be reported to the US Geological Survey and made publicly available.

Hazard tree removal along Bear Camp Road will continue for the next several days. The operation includes coordination with dump trucks to remove excess limbs and debris from the cutting area.

WEATHER:A brief warming and drying trend is forecast for Monday and Tuesday ahead of an approaching cold front. This warm weather is not expected to have any significant influence on fire activity. Heavy rain and high winds are anticipated to arrive late on Thursday and persist through the weekend.

EVACUATIONS:Level 1 evacuation order is in place for Agness and the surrounding area. For current evacuation levels, visit: https://bit.ly/MoonComplexEvacs

CLOSURES: The Emergency Area and Road Closure on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest was revised, reducing the area closure and opening several key travel routes to the public, including Agness Road (FSR 33) between Agness and Powers, OR, and Burnt Ridge Road (FSR 2308) between Merlin and Agness, OR, and Eden Valley Road (FSR 3348). Bear Camp Road remains closed.  This closure is being reassessed for safe reopening on a regular basis as work to mitigate fire-related hazards is completed. The Rogue River Trail remains closed from Marial to Foster Bar. There are many fire-damaged trees along the trail that may fall at any moment, as well as destabilized slopes where rockslides could occur with the impact of heavy precipitation.

An additional emergency road closure is in place, at mile marker 46.2 on Agness Road (FSR 33), for critical repair. This closure is anticipated to continue for several weeks. Please use the bypass road and expect delays. Please visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/rogue-siskiyou/alerts for closure information and maps.

The Wild Section of the Rogue River is now open for self-permitted travel. Permits can be picked up at the Smullin Visitor Center. There is no camping or hiking along the river between Marial and Foster Bar, and only brief stops in designated areas are allowed. Hazards within the fire area along the river include fire-weakened trees and rockslides from the riverbank. Recreators traveling the river can report hazards observed using this form: https://bit.ly/MoonComplexReport. Reported hazards can be viewed at: https://bit.ly/RogueConditions.
